With changes in hair graft transplantation, some of the accepted standard surgical procedures became less popular. Among these procedures were scalp reductions, flaps, and scalp lifts with or without tissue expansion. They are performed to repair a site of traumatic injury, to restore its functionality and cosmetic appearance, and to repair a skin defect caused by a congenital malformation. Although these surgical procedures are not the first-choice treatment for all types of baldness, and have a limited role in hair restoration, in the hands of an appropriately trained and experienced surgeon, they can be a highly successful approach in carefully selected patients. Hence, it is recommended that before considering these surgical procedures, careful choice of a qualified hair transplant surgeon, extensive surgical planning, and proper patient selection is key.
